Review: Proud Mary

Sorry for the slow trickle of posts recently, been a hectic few weeks with my birthday party (post up soon!) and family visiting, but this review won't disappoint! Regularly regarded as the best cafe in Melbourne, Proud Mary definitely has become a Melbourne icon, but is it truly as good as people say?

Chocolate Milkshake - $6
As you can tell by the colour, the colour isn't very strong and
nor was the flavour. They must of stuck to using just ice-cream and
no topping as the flavour wasn't artificially sweet,
but nor did it taste of good quality ice-cream.
Really only recommend people drink milkshakes from ice-cream stores.
Banana Chai Smoothie - $7.50
I really enjoyed this flavour, but don't be like me
and give it a stir beforehand, otherwise you might
end up doing the cinnamon challenge accidentally.
Flavour wise, really great, natural bananas and
good amount of spice. However, in consistency
it was quite runny and not really cold enough
for the warm weather.
Potato Hash - $19
One of the nicest hash browns I've had. Really enjoyed the flavours
on this plate. Firstly the bagna cauda was to die for. Of puree thickness,
the sauce was just so full of flavour, really creamy and
really smooth, really brought the whole dish together. The has had a nice
crispy exterior and well cooked interior, as with all fried things,
was quite oily, and funnily paired with health food "king", kale.
I'm not really a fan of kale, it's quite tough and chewy, and really hard to
swallow. I would've preferred a bit more generosity with the bacon
and I love egg, but doesn't look a bit sad and lonely on the plate?
Presentation definitely could be better.
Ricotta Hotcakes - $16
Starting off with the star ingredient of the dish, the ice-cream.
Amazing flavour, fresh and strong. The ice-cream was quite
icy though. Moving on, I never feel banana pairs well with
hotcakes, as their both quite dry ingredients, but in this case
it was alright. The hotcake wasn't too dry or heavy (unlike
Top Paddock), plus the blueberries added pops of juice.
And as always I never like syrup, so this was no different.
