Review: The Bakers Wife

A lovely barn-house like venue with open beams and brick walls. The Bakers Wife is a large cafe along Burke Rd. It's a great venue to host events, and makes lovely food and drinks. The only thing that distracted from the experience was the staff. I just felt they were quite judgmental and condescending, even though they themselves couldn't answer certain questions about the menu.

Left: Iced Matcha - $6.50
Not a great ice matcha. There was too much undissolved tea,
making the texture grainy. It also had nil sweetness added,
and I enjoy mine with a touch of sugar or stevia.
If you like straight matcha you might like this,
but again there was too much grainy.
Right: Homemade Ice Tea
At the time they had an earl grey lemon tea. Earl grey is not
my tea of choice but this was quite refreshing with the added lemon.
Again there was no sweetness to the tea and I wouldn't preferred some.
Even if there was just some berries adding sweetness that would've been nice.

Slow Cooked Brisket - $22

w/ smokey braised beans, ciabatta toast, jalepeño yoghurt, coriander, mint,
fried green tomatoes & a poached egg.
I really enjoyed this dish. Haven't seen anything like it on a menu before.
The brisket was cooked well, with a lovely think tomato sauce on top.
However, I did find that overall the tomato flavour was overpowering,
being on the brisket, in the beans and also fried like a croquette.
The yoghurt and egg cut through the acid and heaviness of the beef
and beans, and the yoghurt wasn't too spicy.
Overall a very tasty dish and good serving size.

Eggs Benedict - $19.50
w/ ham hock, multigrain toast & cucumber pickle.
A classic benedict with the nice addition of pickles to add some
freshness and acidity. The serving size wasn't as generous as the above
dish and it wasn't as unusual a dish either, but if you enjoy a benedict,
than you will enjoy it.
