Review: Kong BBQ

Finally had the chance to try out Chin Chin founder, Chris Lucas' "new" store Kong BBQ! If you are a poor uni student like me, you will be happy to know that their prices are generally cheaper than Chin Chin's, only paid about $20 for the night with food shared between 4 people.

p.s. just like Chin Chin, the service was amazing, our waiter was just the loveliest young man ever, really social and polite.

Edamame - $8
Perfectly cooked, tasty as always, but would've preferred more seasoning.
Bossam - $19
Pork belly with soba noodles, nashi and apple soy
Good dish to cool off, perfect for summer. I love soba noodles
but the vinaigrette was a bit too overly complex, with the fruit adding
clashing sweetness that didn't exactly sit will in my stomach,
but I have never been a fan of sweet and savoury.
Hot Wings w/ Gochujang & Chipotle - $12
Don't let the bright red scare you, like most Korean dishes the chilli
is more flavoursome and sour than spicy. The chicken was cooked to
perfection and I loved the thick coating of sauce.
Was literally finger licking amazing.
BBQ Zucchini & Silken Tofu Salad w/ soy vinegar dressing - $16
This dish again did not sit well with me. There was just something
about the pickled eggplant and mushrooms, had a very odd, cosmetic
flavour like they were doused in essence and spices.
Kong Bossam BBQ tray - $28
Pulled chicken & pork, pork belly and beef brisket with lettuce, pickles,
kimchi and walnut ssamjang.
Loved this platter, would be filling for 2. The crackling AMAZING, pork belly
was a bit tough though, the chicken was so tasty, one was pulled, the other
coated in a chilli based sauce. However, the highlight for me was the beef brisket,
it was just so tender and moist and had a lovely BBQ flavour. The pickles, some
vegetables were nice, others were just plane bitter, didn't like the kimchi at all but
the ssamjang was amazing, a mix between hoisin and fermented bean curd for me,
reminded me of good hotpot.
