Review: Axil Coffee Roasters

Rated one of Melbourne's best brunch places, with a long list of loyal customers. We tried Axil for the first time, and sadly it didn't live up to the hype for us.

Left: Ice Coffee - $6
Much better than my ice mocha, the coffee was strong, sweetened by the ice cream
but still came out cool, but not ice cold.
Right: Ice Mocha - $6
My ice mocha came out warm, even the melted ice-cream didn't help chill it down.
There was just too much melted cocoa, that didn't even dissolve properly, leaving it
overly sweet and grainy. Definitely wouldn't recommend until they refine their recipe.
Red Velvet Pancakes - $18
This looked so good on instagram, but sadly it looks better than it tastes.
The pancakes were just too dense, and left this grainy feeling on my tongue.
Overall the whole thing was just too sweet, the raspberries offered some tangy relief.
The black sesame ice cream although smooth and creamy, with excellent flavour
just did not suit the rest of the dish. The cream cheese ganache was also way too thick and
sweet, making the whole dish too decadent. I think they tried too hard to be inventive with this dish
when they should have stuck to simple flavours.
Pulled Pork Blue Corn Tacos - $18
Quite a small serving size, definitely not filling for my friend,
but in terms of flavour, I really enjoyed this dish. The pork was really tender
and marinated well. All the condiments really brought explosions of flavour to your mouth,
the cheese added some pungency while the pickles added freshness.
The use of  blue corn tortillas was very interesting, having never eaten them before,
I went home and googled it. Turns out they have a lower GI and are better for you.
They also give the bread a sweeter taste, and I definitely did notice a taste difference.
